Cathryn: Hi you’re speaking to Cathryn at The Pensions Advisory Service how can I help you?
There are predators after your pension
Geoff: Hi, I was called out of the blue from a company who did a pension review for me, I think I might have got a bit carried away. I can’t find out where my money is.
This is based on a true story
Cathryn: And you haven’t been able to contact them?
Geoff: No, the phone number seems to be disconnected. That’s all the money I had for my retirement. It’s over a hundred grand. I don’t know what I’m going to do without it.
Cathryn: I’m really sorry but it sounds like you might have lost all that money.
How it should have gone
Cathryn: Hi you’re speaking to Cathryn at The Pensions Advisory Service. How can I help you?
Geoff: Hi, I’m not sure what to do. I was called out of the blue from a company who did a pension review for me. But now I’ve seen the paperwork, something doesn’t feel right.
Cathryn: OK, have you signed anything?
Geoff: No, not yet. It’s probably fine – you know a friend of mine has done a deal with this bloke before. They invest your pension in a hotel complex abroad and you get 8% guaranteed return.
Cathryn: You should be aware that there are a lot of pension scams around – and this sounds like it could be one of them.
Geoff: A scam...oh no!
Cathryn: Well, it’s a good thing you got in touch, a lot of people don’t call us until it’s too late.
Geoff: Oh thank God I called you. Otherwise that would have been the end of my retirement.
