Number of people who transferred out of their DB schemes last year

FOI reference - FOI 2017-05-22
Date - 22/05/2017

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I would like to know how many people in the UK you estimate have transferred out of their defined benefit pension schemes in the last year.

If possible, I would also like this data for each of the most recent five complete years, broken down by equal twelve-month periods. Please use a year end of 31 March, or whichever year end date is most convenient.

If you are unable to provide five years of data, please provide three years of data, otherwise please provide data for the last year.

I can confirm that we hold information falling within the scope of your request.

Information we are able to supply

For the period of 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 defined benefit pension schemes have, in total, reported 67,700 transfers out of the scheme. However, not all of these schemes have reported how many transfers they carried out. Our estimate is that there were around 80,000 transfers made.

We do not hold this information for previous years.
