Whistleblowing reports over the past five years

FOI reference - FOI-3763

Date - 10 April 2019

Under the Freedom of Information Act request, I would like to know how many whistleblowing reports The Pensions Regulator received over the past five years. I would like this information broken down by year, with the year end March 31st. With the most recent year being 2018/19.

I have interpreted 'whistleblowing' mentioned in your request as referring specifically to non-statutory whistleblowers – ie reports made to The Pensions Regulator (TPR) by individuals who are not obligated, under section 70 of The Pensions Act 2004, to report breaches of law (statutory whistleblowers).

I can confirm that we hold the information you have requested.

Information we are able to supply

In the table below you will see the number of whistleblowing reports received by TPR over the past three years, up to 31 March 2019.

Year (ending 31 March) Number of whistleblowers
2016/17 3,593
2017/18 4,857
2018/19 8,445
Total 16,895

Whistleblowing figures for 2013/14 and 14/15 and 15/16 can be found in our previous FOI response on the National Archives.
