Bringing your staging date forward

If you don’t have a personal care assistant who needs to be put into a pension scheme, you can bring your staging date forward to any date. You might choose to do this so that you can meet your duties at a time that suits you.

If you bring your staging date forward you can complete your declaration of compliance at the same time. Completing your declaration early means you can get this task out of the way and don’t need to think about it anymore.

Your new staging date

First of all you will need to decide which date you want to bring your staging date forward to. This can be any date of your choosing. Your new staging date will apply to all your personal care assistants, if you have more than one. This will be the date that your automatic enrolment duties start. Once you’ve brought your staging date forward you can’t change it back.

How to bring your staging date forward

You will need to tell us that you are bringing your staging date forward either on or before your new staging date. You can notify us using the same online form that you use for declaration of compliance.

You’ll need to provide all of the information below. Make sure you have it ready when you bring your staging date forward.

  • Your PAYE reference - found on letters you have received from The Pensions Regulator about automatic enrolment. Alternatively you can find it on the letter HMRC sent you when you first registered as an employer or from your payroll software package.
  • Your letter code - a 10 digit reference that appears on all correspondence from us about automatic enrolment. Find out your letter code.
  • Your current staging date and your new staging date. Find out your current staging date.
  • Your name, address (including postcode) and email address.

If you have already started to complete your declaration of compliance online and then decide to bring forward your staging date, you will need to contact us on 0345 600 1011 in order to fully complete your declaration.

Complete your declaration of compliance at the same time

You can choose to complete your declaration of compliance at the same time as you bring your staging date forward. Completing your declaration early means you can get this task out of the way and don’t need to think about it anymore. If you decide not to do this, you must complete your declaration within five months after your new staging date.

What happens next?

Your new staging date becomes the date from when your automatic enrolment duties start. You now need to:

  • write to your personal care assistant to tell them how automatic enrolment applies to them - you must do this within six weeks after your new staging date
  • if you didn’t complete your declaration of compliance when you brought your staging date forward, you must do it within five months after your new staging date

Once you have completed your declaration of compliance you still have ongoing duties towards your staff. Your

Once you have completed your declaration of compliance you still have ongoing duties towards your staff. Your ongoing duties include assessing your personal care assistant each time you pay them to work out if they need to be put into a pension scheme. If, after your new staging date, your personal care assistant is aged between 22 up to state pension age and earns over £833 a month (or £192 a week), you must put them into a pension scheme that you also pay into.
