DB schemes with overseas sponsors

FOI reference - FOI-42
Date - 4 October 2022

Request

Do you know if TPR holds any data on DB schemes with overseas sponsors? I realise that definition is a bit vague, but anything you’ve published or have easy access to would be of interest.

My reason for asking is that we’re doing a new report on sole trusteeship and we’ve got some interesting results about the relatively high use of sole trustees by schemes with overseas trustees. But we’re looking for a bit of contextual data on how common that is.

Response

I can confirm that we hold information falling within scope of your request.

Information we are able to supply

  • DB / hybrid schemes with a principal employer overseas: 1%
  • DB / hybrid schemes where the global ultimate owner of the principal employer is overseas: 31%
  • Number of DB / hybrid schemes (rounded to the nearest 10): 5,370

The analysis represents the number of schemes as of the 8 September 2022. It therefore differs to the total number of DB / hybrid schemes published in our official statistics on the DB defined benefit annual report, where the effective date is the 31 March 2021.

This number (5,370) of DB / hybrid schemes should only be quoted in relation to the analysis below, otherwise please refer to our official statistics.
